Election 2008-BIGGER THAN EVER!
OEA has targeted two damaging ballot measures for defeat this November.  Ballot Measures 58 and 60 were penned by Bill Sizemore and would be detrimental to educators and students.

Measure 58 would prohibit teaching non-English-speaking public school students in a language other than English for more than two years.  OEA opposes this measure because it ignores that fact that each student we teach has a unique learning style.  This politically-motivated, one-size-fits-all approach would hurt kids.

Measure 60 would require a "merit pay" system for teachers.  Neither teacher performance nor who will judge that performance is defined in the measure (even though our jobs and pay would depend on it).  Measure 60 would promote more standardized tests, taking us even further from the development of critical thinking, collaboration and problem solving skills we know are vital for student success in today's world.

It is imperative that OEA members reach out to all Oregon voters and educate them on why everyone should vote NO on these measures.  We are asking every OEA member to call targeted voters during the last six weeks of the election. This means we must fill every phone bank in every OEA office Monday through Thursday until Election Day on November 4.

Beaverton Education Association

k052002_05_8732.jpgThe mission of the Beaverton Education Association (BEA) is to preserve, promote, and improve public education through advocacy, action and education.

This mission is reflected in our goals of member rights, membership, leadership, political action, communication, and professional issues.

BEA's mission statement can be seen in the work of our association/union. This includes our organizational structure, our need for volunteers, our budget, our community outreach, our involvement in politics, our professional concerns, and our bargaining.

BEA is affiliated with our state and national associations; the Oregon Education Association (OEA), and the National Education Association (NEA).

BEA represents its' 2,600 members' interests through bargaining and collaborative problem solving sessions with the Beaverton School District.  We offer a variety of training opportunities in areas such as leadership, communication, contract maintenance and licensure.

As our membership grows, we continue to look for new ways to address the challenges facing the modern educator. Creating an informative and friendly web site is one way we are trying to meet the diverse needs of our members.

hanna_04.jpgTake a look around our site and see what we're all about. This site is intended to help current BEA members with the many questions they may have about their local union as well as inform new or prospective BEA members.
